Ike and I had a pizza date night. I can't even believe I'm sharing this pic. I admit I have a problem with pizza.


I went to The Sofitel Hotel and laid by the pool with a friend in town from NY!

I went to the flea market with Christie and bought a vintage necklace and am adorable headband! My husband is pictured here because on the way home my car decided to break down. It's time for a new car.

As I mentioned a few posts ago, I have a very special place in my heart for the homeless community. Ike and I met a great guy, Mel, when we moved to Los Angeles who started a charity. About a year ago, he established Monday Night Missionaries (like them on facebook). Mel gets a group together M-F and serves dinner to our homeless family on Skid Row. It's an overwhelming experience to say the least. When we arrived on Friday night the line to eat a warm meal was already formed. It's quite remarkable, the faith these people have for Monday Night Missionaries. They come every night with the faith that we will show up, give them a nice meal, call them by their name and engage in a conversation with them.

There are 8,000 homeless people on Skid Row. Alone.


Here's the line already formed when we arrived.

Immediately after we arrived on Skid Row I was overwhelmed. There was so much going on I was trying my hardest to stay focused and not completely lose it. It was very very loud & crowded, and my face must have said it all, because one of the girls grabbed my arm reminding me to focus. Reassuring me it wasn't always so loud. I volunteered to go to the front of the line and pass out the plates of food. I smiled and made eye contact with each of our skid row family. When they come to get their food they tell us their name and the entire group of us say, "hello ______." Mel says that when these people hear their names it reminds them they have a family and they are important. I think it's a wonderful idea. Hearing your name is very intimate vs "hey you". After everyone in the line was full we had leftover sandwiches so we were able to walk, in groups of course, in the alley and to the Midnight Mission passing out our leftover sandwiches. Everyone was extremely grateful.

Leaving Skid Row left my heart filled with so much love and compassion. My heart absolutely bleeds for these people. I so look forward to returning as often as I can and doing my own part in helping my Skid Row family. What will YOU do for the homeless community in your city?

My husband and I lead very hectic, busy lives in LA. Between his job in the music industry and mine as a celebrity assistant we have very little down time. I have 4 days off and am somewhat lost....I've cleaned the house, gone grocery shopping, had my hair done, got the dog groomed, worked out, cooked dinner, but in all honesty I'm feeling lonely. I long for friends like I had in Austin. The ones who I would call on a whim and they'd gladly meet for a drink and long talk. I miss girl nights and sleepovers. I know it will happen in time but patience is not a virtue of mine :).



I've gotten MUCH better about stepping out of my comfort zone and doing things that make my knees shake but I still struggle. Ike is my safety net, he will talk to a wall. I need to depend less on him and get out on my own. My goal this spring and summer is to do something that scares me every week. Last week I tried cardio barre (www.cardiobarre.com). This week I am going to do a barefoot run on the beach. Alone. The water is my nirvana; the one space I find true contentment and peace. Where my mind is free and I feel like I can breathe.


Days like today I am extremely thankful for Finley. He sure can make me laugh..

I bought lots of sugar cookies to bring to my first volunteer project in LA. I'm joining a group that brings dinner every night to the homeless on Skid Row. I start tomorrow evening! Did you know LA has 74,000 homeless people?

Mistakes are what makes us, right?

I'm fortunate enough to have an entire support team. If I didn't God only knows
where I'd be. But what about those people that don't have anyone to help them get on their feet?
The homeless man I met this week on the corner of SM blvd and the 405 reminded me of my dad; "be careful out there, when it gets damp the roads become slippery." You see, when I moved to Austin and saw the vast homeless population I would clean out my pantry and fridge, load up garbage bags of food and give it away. A few times they didn't want it but most of the time they were appreciative. Since being in LA I've friended a man named Michael and believe I got more from the 30 mins I spent talking to him than he's ever got from me. (this is actually a fact). He shared his story with me...He had no family, never been married and no kids. He fell into drugs some years ago and now lived in his old van, equipped with a small tv and bed. (as strange and unsafe as it may sound he showed Ike and I his home). He made no excuses, simply saying His choices led him to where he is today. When I offered him a hug and wanted to know his name he said that that's all he wanted; someone who cared enough not to judge him but someone who asked his name and learned his story.
I know why I have a place in my heart for the broken and lost and I also know that I am making a conscious effort to stop judging. Who am I to judge any soul? Everyone battles their own demons and in this day and age I believe we need love. I challenge each of you who read this to smile at the person who is asking for help on the corner, to not throw stones when we ALL live in glass houses.

One of the many perks of my job is when A needs to get fit that means I'm included as well! We started working out with a personal trainer, Mike Alexander (www.madfit.com) 4 times a week last week and it's been wonderful! I'm sure you've heard Mike's name before, he's famous for getting Jessica in shape for Dukes of Hazzard. Here's what we've been doing:

Workout:
4 times a week with Mike for 1 hour
3 times a week we do cardio (running/elliptical) for 40 minutes
1 time a week we take a class (Pilates/barre/yoga)

Diet:
Low carb/high protein/and we also started a 3 day cleanse from Pressed Juicery (they deliver your juices for the day everyday to your house www.pressedjuicery.com).

Basically this is kicking my ass. However, I also know that this is the BEST opportunity I have to get my beach body (that you need year round here)!! I've been given the best resources and an accountability partner to keep me strong! I'll keep you posted on the results, maybe each week I can blog about them...Right now I am extremely sore everywhere, I miss junk food and food in general haha but I am excited for a healthy LIFESTYLE and I know this is the best gift someone could ever give me or I can give myself!!

Oh, Laguna Beach. I LOVE you! Ike and I spent a long weekend in Laguna Beach on the water for our 6 month anniversary. We picked a dog friendly hotel and I got us a room with a view. When we arrive we were greeted with a basket filled with wine, cheese and crackers and even a new baby for Finley!

On Friday night Ike and I had dinner on the water at the hotel. It was delicious! Saturday we rented a cabana for the day with Ike's cousin Daryle and his girlfriend, Liz. It was perfect! We had our own room and bar inside with our own private deck/beach area and waitress.

Saturday night after the cabana we hit a dive bar and made memories that won't be posted on the blog but will stay in our hearts forever!! We love you Liz and Daryle!!

We celebrated Easter with our California family this year and it was splendid! We spent most of the day at Ike's aunt and uncles house. The men watched the Masters and the girls had a blast! We got the family playing beer pong which turned into wine and vodka pong later in the day. I got schooled by mostly everybody. Haha.

It was a lovely day spent with our family out here; we ended our day at Erin and Lisa's house for a quick dinner and immediately after we ate we decided it was time to go home and veg!
